It was the perfect New Years Eve. It was 1999. I was in Vermont in the US the home of the famous film, A White Christmas. As the clock struck midnight, I walked outside in the snow hand in hand with the new girl in my life.

Its a beautiful place and at the start of the Millennium it was a landmark moment that I am able to look back at. We were not well-off, we had very little and if I am honest, I was barely keeping up with my mortgage repayments, but we had our health and dreams to make a better life.

UKFast was only months old and we sat down in front of the log fire the next day and wrote out everything we had achieved in those first few months of business. The list didn’t comprise of very much, maybe 7 or 8 things, but it allowed us a small victory and gave us a sense of pride and a warm reminder that we were going in the right direction. As a business person you get regular setbacks, so its easy to forget that you are making progress. This discipline makes the positive steps you are making, however small, stand out, just like footprints in the snow.

Our first list was a little sparse to say the least. We didn’t have any staff, we’d moved to a tiny 2 person office in the city, we can’t have had more than 4 or 5 customers, but it gave us a platform to start building in the New Year.

Its a discipline that we continue to follow as a tradition and each year the list gets a little longer. We list people, awards, accreditations, office moves, holidays, great moments, literally any achievement however big or small. We do a business version and a home one too. It is something we now look forward to and its a great time to look back on all the events of the previous year and reflect.

In a world that races at 1,038 miles per hour (at its circumference) it often feels like we are going at the same speed. Its all too easy to forget to pause and look back on the journey, weigh up what went well and what could have gone better.

However successful you are, there are always areas in your life where you can improve.

Honesty is an important part of finding true success. You need people around you who can spot when you are going of track, but you also need to be honest with yourself too. It requires discipline, because more often than not, its easier to ignore problems as often the truth hurts. If you are listing the good you have to list the bad too.

It might be weight related, it may be your work life balance is out, you may be neglecting someone, you maybe neglecting yourself? Whatever it is, there has to be something you can improve. Deep down you probably know what it is, its often difficult to face up to, because if you do, you have to do something about it.

But we need the bad things too as they are important drivers to help give us things to aim at to improve. Without those annoying negative things we’d have no reason for growth and fundamentally, this is what life is all about.

So dont beat yourself up for all the bad things you might be doing, just use them are leverage to make some serious improvements.

Besides what choice do we have, if you leave a problem, does it go away? Seldom, in my experience do problems just disappear they normally get bigger!

For the record I have a list as long as my arm of all the things I might have done better if I’d taken more care or been more disciplined. What I have found though is by writing down my New Years refection it helps me solidify what is needed for the journey ahead.

So before you do your goal setting this year and write down the list of everything you want to do and become, it might be worth considering sitting down with your partner, be they business or pleasure, or both like in my case, and list all the things you have done together and achieved.

I promise you its worth that warm fuzzy feeling and it gives you the momentum to take on 2012 and all the challenges you set yourself and those unexpected ones!

Don’t expect a miracle, success is built up of small steps and lots of them, but years later those small steps may culminate to giant leaps or the pitter patter of tiny feet.

I wish you all the best and I hope to see you on your journey soon.

Best wishes for 2012 and beyond.

Lawrence Jones

It seems like a lifetime ago when I arrived in Manchester. What a city, what an era.

Bloxham was selling posters in Afflecks Palace, Ferguson had just arrived at United, Tony Wilson was giving the Factory a whole new meaning. Tim Bacon was a barman in JWJohnsons, Oglesby was at Cheadle Hulme where only weeks earlier I’d been playing against him on the great British rugby fields.

Bruno was holding centre stage at the French Restaurant, at the then Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza, Midland Hotel. I was the cheeky piano player busking my way through life.

I had never been so poor, but I had certainty that something good was just over the horizon.

I learnt pretty early on that it was never going to be that simple. I took a hundred wrong roads and although I had the belief that “one day” I’d be successful, I had not found my direction.

That direction came after a trip to New York when I realised that the next era had to involve the internet. I was now 30. I had tried and failed in so many areas, and I knew my venture had to be the right one. Without time on my side there was no margin for error.

There is a saying that behind every successful man is a good woman.

That could not be truer than in my case. My chance meeting with my now wife Gail Jones was undoubtedly a great Manchester partnership. 200 yards away from where Rolls met Royce in Albert Square, we instantly hit it off.

Many people ask me, “how do you work with your wife?” I have never had an issue with it. We both focus on different areas of the business and whilst it is sometimes hard to switch off when you live with your business partner, I have had the benefit of a soundboard for every major decision that has ever been part of the shaping of UKFast.

Has the last 10 years been an easy ride? There is no such thing! Every week there is something new. That’s the nature of business and life in general. It’s full of ups and downs. 3 days ago I had the first of 2 operations on my thumb after trapping it in a door and slicing clean through the bone. I was told that they were going to amputate it the next morning.

Not the holiday on Necker I was hoping for. But after another operation and a great deal of determination, I am told now that it will survive! And whilst the holiday has been somewhat interrupted with emergency hospital trips, the kids are oblivious to any disruptions thanks to Danielle, PA come Mary Poppins.

So I’m sat here on Turtle Beach where my daughters found 2 baby turtles yesterday fighting for survival, less than 10 minutes from hatching. Today Charlie, one of the Necker team has just helped dig out another 72 other turtles that would not have made it. And what about my thumb? Well I am managing to type, and inspired by just hearing the news that I have been very kindly awarded the EN Entrepreneur of the Year title for 2011, I am reminded that around every corner is another exciting challenge and the only pain you feel gives you a bench mark to truly appreciate the great moments in our lives.

I know my children will never forget today and the freeing of what seems like hundreds of turtles as they swim for safety around the girls ankles. I will never forget this day for very different reasons.

I haven’t won many things in my life and its typical that I am not there to celebrate with my colleagues and friends without whom I’d be average at best. However to be awarded this is just one of those moments in my life where I stopped, took a sharp intake of breath, filled my lungs and had to brace myself.

I am honoured to accept such a title. Do I deserve it? Not in a month of Sundays. What does it mean to me now? If I thought there was any let up on the road ahead, I was mistaken. I now have an added responsibility to live up to all those kind people who have belief in me. Thank you I am truly honoured.

It seems doubly special that I find out on Necker Island, home of a great inspiration, friend and in my opinion Britain’s greatest living Entrepreneur.

If you don’t mind I have some turtles to attend to.

So you want to be successful? Just how far are you prepared to go? Do you have what it takes? Do you know what it takes?

All these questions need answering if you stand a chance of making a difference in your lifetime.

The answers you give are all relative to the results that you will arrive at too. The more committed, the more passionate, the more determined, the bigger the outcome.

The same philosophy applies to everything in life, sport, parenting, education. It is so simple, if you want to be good at something, you have to get obsessed and practice over and over again until you become an expert. As Tony Robbins says, “Repetition is the mother of skill.”

Show me an expert and you will see in front of you a dedicated and committed person who understands the importance of self sacrifice and application.

Its safe to say when I started UKFast, I was a rookie, and although I had been in business 12 years or so before as a musician and empressario, I had learned a great many lessons, however I was not really equipped for what lay ahead. I was also still making the same mistakes over and over again, not learning.

And now, although I have leant an enormous amount helping get UKFast up to its present size, I find myself at that rookie stage again.

Its one of the challenges of running a business that is constantly growing. As soon as you get comfortable with the business, you wake up one morning and the number of people in the office has doubled again. With a plan to add 100 staff to UKFast over the next 18 months I have it all to do.

I suppose this is one of the reasons why I get up in the morning. It might also explain why I get up so early!

I am often asked “what drives you?” Its a great question because I am not 100% sure of the answer. I originally set UKFast up to make enough money to go back into the music industry. Ironically I had to sell my 96 track digital recording studio to help get UKFast get off the ground. So that backfired somewhat. I lived for recording music and spent every spare penny writing and producing music. The music industry is further away now than when I set out on my journey 12 years ago. So if its not the music, what is it?

Its definitely not money. I enjoy a few of the finer things in life, however most of my personal money goes on sport. The only things I value in life are the people and relationships I have for the people around me. So maybe that’s it. Is it the people in my life that make me do what I do? I certainly wouldn’t work this hard for myself. This makes sense, I am sure those of you with wives, husbands and kids, find yourselves working considerably harder than the chapter of your life before. I just have a huge extended family now with UKFast and everyone who connects to her.

It doesn’t explain however why I have this obsessive gene but thats for another blog perhaps.

I was interviewed by 2 dynamic ladies last week for an award we have been nominated for. They were clearly intrigued by the energy in UKFast. They asked me “what do you do when people repeatedly miss targets?” The right answer at this point in a normal business probably touches on “micro management.” I simply said, “people are always going to occasionally dip, we will offer them support, but invariably they will bounce back. If they don’t we will find them another challenge with in the business.”

They quizzed me further, I could see the doubt on their faces, however I was not about to tell someone something that I didn’t believe in just to influence a potential award. I went on to explain, that the only time people dip at UKFast is when they have problems in their personal or home life. Our job as managers and colleagues, is to identify these problems, raise them discreetly and offer a helping hand or a solution. I passionately believe that if someone is unhappy for whatever reason, you not only have a duty to help, it also makes good business sense. If productivity falls as the result of distractions, the opposite applies when people are fully engaged and really happy at home and in their business career.

The next part of the interview process involved the 2 ladies interviewing 10 or so staff and asking them for their personal opinions about the business. Jonathan and I were kicked out of the boardroom at this stage.

After a good hour we were invited back in. I was told “You should be really proud of your team Lawrence.” She’d asked them, “if you take away the beautiful offices, trips to Verbier, Wales, endless parties, the chef, would you still feel as passionate about UKFast?”

They’d all said “hell yea!” Stephen (a good friend and team member for 8ish years) piped up “this is just the gloss, I started when the business didn’t have all this and we were in a tiny office down the road. I come to work to compete, to make a difference.”

George said, he’d never woken up and not wanted to come to work. Charlotte who is my youngest manager at 24 this weekend, said “I know I can make a difference and I have the support of everyone around if I need help.”

I could feel the emotion swelling inside. If there was one defining moment why I work so hard and do what I do, its clearly linked to these awesome characters I am lucky to work with.

After they’d left, Stephen popped his head into the boardroom. He said, “It’s like I said to them Loz, people don’t dip in performance here. If they do its because they have problems in their home life.”

I realised just how far we have all come on our journey together. If my job is to help get the team aligned, here is a clear sign that my managers have a great understanding of people, each other and our values.

It doesn’t matter what role you have in life or why you exist on this great planet of ours, you are fundamentally put here to make a difference. Its safe to say the guys at UKFast do this in abundance.

This week saw the fashion retailer Henley’s file for administration. It only seems like yesterday when Simon and Ben the 2 owners sat with me at a Sale Sharks match discussing online retail. One of the boys confidently said, “our customers need to touch and try on our garments, we will never do more much than the £10,000 per month we are doing now. The online shop can’t compete with our high street stores”

This sounded very much like a challenge. And as someone who hosts hundreds of online retailers, some huge ones too, I knew I couldn’t lose.

I bet them £1 I could prove them wrong.

Sitting with my web designers and marketing team, we immediately found ways of improving their system. Their e-commerce shop was clunky although the photography was stunning, the site could never live up to the brand, because the site was slow and the user experience was poor.

We got stuck in as a project and actually built Henleys a new website and content management system to help run it. I know this is some way from our core business, however we were helping out friends and after all, I had a pound at stake.

With in a few months of UKFast getting involved, the site was bringing in significantly more money, and in December that year, they did more than £1,000,000 on the site. We’d actually done nothing more than make the user experience the most important focus point. By speeding up the site and putting the ecommerce shop on seriously fast servers on the UKFast lightening speed network and the results to date, speak for themselves. We didn’t do any “SEO” or optimisation, we didn’t try and stuff the site full of keywords, we didn’t try and cheat the search engines, we built something that users would just love, and they did!

So what went wrong?

Well this is a lesson for us all. Luckily the site is still going and although the brand is taking a battering at the moment, the site is still in action, though sadly it is not performing like it used to.

As a marketeer, when you change something, you monitor it. If it’s good you carry on, if it’s bad you stop and revert to previous stage.

Henleys recruited some in-house SEO Experts. The revenue the site generated warranted more investment in this area and quite rightly, this is what they did.

However, in my opinion, they changed too much in one go to measure what it was that stifled the traffic.

Along with moving to a new web designer, they moved their infrastructure to their designers too which resulted in a massive slow down in site performance. This was not picked up by the team as when they viewed their site, it was super fast as all the images were cached on their machine. To a normal visitor arriving for the first time, they did not have this luxury, to them, the site ran incredibly slowly.

They also changed their domain name from HenleysClothing.co.uk to Henleys.co.uk

This is a fair enough decision in the board room, however, henleysclothing.co.uk was now a massive asset and well used and loved by hundreds of thousands of consumers. It was also very popular with Google who attributes “track record” historical performance information to every domain. A new domain, is literally starting again.

With a number of other UK businesses with the name Henleys in the title, Henleys Clothing descibed the business perfectly.

This coupled with umpteen other changes to their strategy and layout, image sizes, all made it impossible for even the best marketeers to monitor what works and what doesn’t.

The result, they lost momentum and they never recovered.

Sadly, they were already doing everything right and if they’d just left it, it would have continued to flourish at the rate it was.

We have all been there. When something starts to go well, we want more. Its not until you lose what you had, that you concede where we were, was actually where we wanted to be. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and this is why as a business owner or manager or if you are involved with an online business, there is so much information available to help you track your progress. The important thing is, no matter how excited you are for growth to keep the board happy, make small steps and measure. I call this Stop, Start, Rewind. Only when you get really good can you do the fast forward, however use this mode with caution, and if you really cant resist, make sure you have the right people on your team who will tell you the truth at every stage. More importantly, never put middle managers in between you and your key suppliers.

I had real problems reaching Ben and Simon once the site was established. When I was told news of the domain change I did everything in my power to get them information that I had on hundreds of other companies who had done similar things. I was always batted back to the same person who was pioneering all the change.

If you have people helping manage suppliers, make sure you check in regularly to ensure your team are not holding back information to protect themselves. No one likes being responsible for failure, so its imperative that you keep a close eye on the things that really matter in your business.

On a positive side, Henley’s still has a very strong brand, great clothes and if they can get the site back up to speed (quite literally) in my opinion this is fixable. If Simon and Ben are remaining at the helm, I’d imagine they will bounce back very quickly and learn from these very difficult lessons we have all had to face at some time or other. They are tremendous entrepreneurs, it is important not to underestimate what they have achieved building a huge brand in a very short amount of time.

We have an amazing statistic that the vast majority of people who leave our network, return at some point in the future. We had one this week, Gypsy Media. We had hosted them from early 2001-ish for 5 or 6 years. They left for a more competitive solution. They found that that didn’t work. They tried a more expensive solution with a competitor of ours, and after bouncing around a few suppliers, they returned. It is the most rewarding feeling, helping people achieve their goals. At the same time, it is a thankless task. Whilst it goes well, everyone assumes its the SEO specialists and the marketing teams, when it goes wrong, it’s the hosting.

Still I love it and its an amazing era. Who knows where it is going to take us, all I know I am going to keep going, small steps at a time, and measuring as I go.

As someone who is fixated on growing and motivating my team to be the best at what we do, I am always trying to understand what are the key driving points that make some people incredibly successful.

I was about to start blogging about the fact that when you have a wife and children, suddenly you seem to become more successful. I first came accross this theory when Vernon Lord a then finance director at Granada jokingly commented that he disliked me, there is always a little truth in the jest. He said, “you have no wife, kids, loan repayments, school fees, ex-wives. You have nothing that ensures you have to perform.”

I reminded him that I’d never missed my target and that I was his most consistent performer. “That’s another reason, you have messed up my theory!” he said.

And actually, during the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, I am reminded that my theory is completely inaccurate. Merely a coincidence. There are millions of unsuccessful parents as well as successful ones. I have the association of this, just like Veron, because over the years I have seen people step up when they have children.

So yes, becoming a father or mother is a driving force, but it doesn’t guarantee success and what about the individuals who are well on their way to success long before they settle down?

They announced the winner of the Life Time Achievers Award, David Beckham, he is a great example of someone who was inspired from an early age.

In fact Beckham optimizes real inspiration, and its something he has had since his childhood. Are the qualities you find in a David Beckham character the same ones required in someone who is successful in business? Absolutely. They are one and the same. However where sport has some great personalities, it concerns me that on the very same channel, we are spoon fed Sugar as the equivalent role model for the business world. Sorry Mr Sugar, I am sure you are a very nice man off camera and all aggressive finger wagging is just for TV, however you are no David Beckham. It does make me think we need better role models in business.

I remember hearing a comment from a senior official in the IOD (Institute of Directors) the year I was kindly awarded, Young Director of the Year, it was explained to me that the then Alan Sugar, (prior to his first title of Sir) was setting a very bad example in the manner he was conducting himself in the boardroom, saying “your fired.”

I have to agree on the basis that really you’d find yourself in an employment tribunal if you really behaved like that with your staff, so for young business people who are aspiring to be entrepreneurs, Sugar is not someone I’d recommend emulating. There are much greater leaders out there.

John Timpson being one of my favourites. Another man who is a massive fan of Timpson, is a friend and client James Kight of Printerland. He is a good example of one of those driven characters too, a Beckham of the online world.

Gail pointed out that 2 of Alan Sugar’s directors joked that neither had ever had a compliment in the 14 or so years they’d worked for him. I find this extraordinary and actually quiet intriguing. My real concern with Sugar is his lack of humility and if you have any doubt, look at the chair he uses in his boardroom. It is higher than all the others, almost throne like.

If you want to gain the respect of your team members, work along side them, yes direct, but do not “Lord” things over them.

And bending back to Beckham, it is lovely to see a grown man, a real celebrity genuinely humbled when picking up his well earned Lifetime achievers award.

And here is the difference, during his speech he talked about everyone elses hard work, he never mentioned his own commitment, not once. Great leaders take it on the chin and blame themselves when things go wrong, but you can really spot the best leaders by their lack of appetite to take the glory. They reflect praise and credit others when they are complimented on their success. Beckham stands out as one of those greats, and his speech was a pleasure to watch.

Described by Sir Alex Ferguson as someone who hung back after training to carry on practicing, a joy to watch. You can only imagine the work he put in. He was 16 when he joined the men at Manchester United. If that is not praise enough, I thought HRH Prince William summed it up superbly, when he credited his “*skill, passion and dignity.”

Are these not the essential ingredients I am hunting down? Whatever walk of life you want to be successful in, I think this is as succinct as you can put it.

If there is one other thing that amplifies success and I know is true in my case, behind every successful man there’s a strong woman. Victoria Beckham may not be the most popular person in showbiz, but who can deny her strength of character. Victoria is a formidable woman and an exceptional business person in her own right. It is great to hear a modern day living legend like Beckham speak from the heart and credit his wife saying “she truly is an inspiration to me every single day.”

So maybe a wife is needed afterall?

Have a great Christmas and thank you for reading.

Back in 2011

Best wishes from everyone at UKFast

Lawrence

—————->

* “His contribution to football during his 18 years in the professional game has been exceptionable. As a player he has served loyally as England’s captain for many years, providing us fans with some of the most memorable moments of English football for a generation. During his career he has had highs and lows, but has always remained determined committing himself fully to his Country, his team mates, and to his fans when he is on the field to play. Most importantly, he is an example to young and inspiring footballers of all ages and stages of their career of how to play the game with skill, passion and dignity. Many congratulations David, a well deserved award” HRH Prince William

“Indeed it was a great pleasure to play with David Beckham, a great joy. He is a great footballer and I think even a better person.” Zinedine Zidane

“What’s that?” I replied.

“That feeling inside of you now…. it hurts doesn’t it.”

It certainly did and although I smiled, I thought, I am not giving him the pleasure of saying that again.

I realised why he is such a great motivator. That’s all he had to say, a simple observation, making me focus on the pain I was feeling and boy it hurt all the more.

I had been warned that this is Richard Branson’s game. We were the last to leave the beach, all the others had gone back up the hill to the Great House. It was after midnight and Richard said, “Right, who’s for a game of Perudo?”

If you were like me and had no idea what Perudo is, it is a game of dice that is played on the streets of Peru.

It was during the game I asked Richard if he’d mind if I’d interview him. I had spoken to the EN Magazine and they’d expressed an interest in it. Richard agreed to the idea and on the last day before leaving whilst sitting in his kitchen I had one of the most enlightening conversations of my life. It was a great moment with the kids playing with baby tortoises in the garden and Gail and Joan talking in the background, I really felt a million dollars.

To get advice and insights from a man like Branson is a serious gift and that’s one of the reasons I feel the need to share them. He is a man who does things the “wrong way,” he bucks convention and he is one of the few men alive who have managed to create, maintain and grow huge corporations yet maintain his entrepreneurial flair.

So when he talks, I listen.

Without spoiling the interview, one of the things I highlighted is Richards propensity to compete, at everything.

He plays tennis twice a day, he is always playing chess, backgammon, or racing round the island on a catermaran or kite surf. The man never stops, but there is always a challenge imbedded in everything he does. I highlighted this and he said something along the lines, “life’s all about the challenge.”

Ten days later on business in Dubai, a friend showed me his computer screen and I read the headline, “UKFast wins IT employer of the year.” It was a really proud moment. I’d completely forgotten it was the week of the UK IT Awards.

It means a great deal to win an award because they represent milestones in our history. They are accolades that are owned entirely by the team and reinforce why we all work so hard at constantly trying to improve and better ourselves.

So this week, as finalists at the MEN Awards in Manchester it would have been the “triple” if we’d picked it up. We were in the £10m to £25m category. We’d previously won the under £10m group in 2008.

It was a disappointment even though I wasn’t truly expecting us to win it. It was jolly decent of them to include us again, and as they announced the winner, I remembered that Branson moment. I focussed on the pain of losing and turned up the dial and as I did, I began to understand.

It was right that we didn’t win it. We can do so much better. There aren’t more hours in the day, yet we are wasting time by not being as organised as we could be. I savored the moment. This is the fuel that I need to rise to the next level and understanding this fills me with confidence. I realised that losing is as important as winning and the sinking feeling of losing is actually a great motivator.

Back in the kitchen on Necker, I reminded Richard of one of his biggest losses. I asked him how he felt after the Northern Rock debacle, where after huge amounts of work and courage to take on one of the biggest mess ups in banking history, his bid and his team, Virgin Money were ignored for a weaker state run option. He spoke at length about winning and losing and on this particular occasion, he said, “Oh, I went out and got completely pissed!”

I now understood. It is the avoidance of feeling failure that partly drives him. It is common sense, if you remember the feeling, you are more likely to work harder to avoid it. I remembered just how motivated I was to improve when playing Peruda.

As a man who has had plenty of practice of getting things wrong, I have been using failure as an effective mechanism to inspire change without knowing it. But this time with the added weight of my entire focus on my failure to bring home the prize to the most deserving workforce I have ever had the pleasure to work along side, I felt sick.

That feeling drove to ask the question, “What else can I do to drive UKFast even further, even faster making our product the very best in the market place and setting a new standard in hosting?”

With all the great people supporting me, I do believe I have the answers, I certainly have the right team around me both in and outside of work. Looking through these new set of spectacles, I am beginning to think I have been over complicating something that is essentially very simple.

But strangely, that horrible empty feeling became almost pleasant, knowing that I am about to take the reigns and step up a gear or two and inspire the UKFast team, after all I have only myself to blame, and only I can set the example. I have some extraordinary goals and I cannot afford to miss them. I cant imagine the pain and disappointment for all of us involved.

It is safe to say I am going to do everything necessary to avoid the negative association with missing future amazing milestones.

So I headed to Wales for a simple weekend in the mountains with my family and some of my closest friends. I am feeling inspired, truly inspired.

A few years ago I was a dreamer. A hopeless young man desperate for a purpose, directionless.

Today, I am a man on a mission. I know where I am going and why. I have a greater understanding of the game. I’m here to compete. I am on this planet to make a difference. I cannot wait for monday morning!

Oh, and back on Necker, I won those next 2 games by the way. I am sure you can guess what I said to Richard.

It’s another day at the office, on the outside everything looks normal, if there is such a thing at UKFast. By normal, I mean people down the corridor bouncing on trampettes, heated discussions at every pod of desks, a queue of people wanting to share their latest thoughts and innovations. I walk past someone sticking large brightly coloured letters onto the wall, spelling out our future. I love this place. I love the energy and the people.

I caught her eye. She smiled, but not the usual reflex smile, but one from someone who is making a concerted effort to put on a brave face.

Following me into my den, Rach put down my coffee and said, “she doesn’t want anyone to know, but she’s just split up with her boyfriend.”

Now telling you and the world at this point is probably a little inconsiderate at first thought, however, stood at the bar of the 1.30pm flight to Dubai with a few pals on a business trip, it was agreed that it was a good subject for a blog.

So 20,000 feet in the air, travelling at 875kmph, I feel pretty safe from Sarah’s backlash.

But it isn’t just Sarah and without going into names, there was a list of them. Five beautiful young ladies, all of whom are incredibly supportive, passionate, dynamic people, real assets to our business. So why has it all gone so horribly wrong? And has it?

Firstly, if you met these girls, you’d queue to get a date with them. They are Bond Girls, real life intelligent and fun characters. Yet they are all suddenly wallflowers and Christmas is beckoning.

It’s a bit of a strange phenomenon but its happened enough now for me to question the element of coincidence and reoccurrence.

Here is the theory. UKFast is indeed an extraordinary place to work. It is a place where women and men are not equal. It is a place where we all have to work incredibly hard to keep up, especially us men. I have to be careful not to be discriminative against men here, because I truly believe that women are the better natural communicators.

In UKFast because of our equal opportunities attitude, girls start UKFast and with in 12 months they are young ladies, completely different in looks and attitude and poise. They are more confident, they have a better understanding of life than when they first arrived. Really they are different in nearly every way.

But they often arrive with boyfriends, and this is where the problem starts.

The UKFast induction starts with a week of training in Manchester in the boardroom, followed by 2 or 3 intense days down in North Wales at our Training Centre, Castell Cidwm in the Snowdonian mountain range at the foot of Snowdon.

It is as intense as you want to make it. If you want to push yourself beyond belief, you have the opportunity. Alternatively you can take more of a back seat role and choose a slower pace. Either way at the end of a few days, you will either want to leave with the notion “these guys are crazy!” or you are “IN” and in for keeps.

You never forget the first time you arrive at Castell Cidwm. With thirty 100 ft pines in the entrance, sitting proudly at the head of the most beautiful lake in Wales. New arrivals stare in disbelief. They have heard everyone talk of this magical place, but nothing really prepares you for actually witnessing one of nature’s most extraordinary places. It’s breathtaking.

Once these girls complete training they are thrown in the deep end. It’s not until a year or so later you look back and they just look completely different. I remember having a BBQ recently at the end of the summer, and seeing the girls with their boyfriends, the guys looked really young and out of place with them.

My observations pretty soon manifest themselves as real life issues and suddenly their relationships breakdown. If you are one of the boys who let go of these beautiful girls, you need help and I do not say this flippantly. I know these characters, I know where they are going on their journey. Where are you going? Where are on earth do you think you will end up without super strong women behind you? I’d love to meet the hybrid of perfect women they intend to replace them with. Maybe I am missing a trick. Maybe I am not working these girls hard enough.

Still each to his own. Some people choose the path of least resistance; some of us just love swimming upstream.

So just before switching off my phone whilst buckling into the flight on United Emirates giant new plane A380, I received a message from Sarah.

This is why I go to work, its not for money, its not for glory, its for moments like this, moments of magic. That’s not her message, her message read like this….

“Thank u so much for this morning. Really cheered me up. Thanks for caring. Have a great time in Dubai.”

With 5 of my top young professionals all dismayed at losing boyfriends, I’d invited them to my home for breakfast before my flight. Ben cooked pancakes with his homemade blueberry sauce. After breakfast the girls headed to the Marriot Spa , where Harriet laid on a few things to cheer them up and remind them just how beautiful they really are.

UKFast Girls on Tour (Trip back from Switzerland)

I had a busy day ahead. I had to be at the airport for 11ish. I had a 9.15am meeting with a marketing agency I own, so I’d planned a quick breakfast and group hug prior to start of their day. There is strength in numbers and together they are able to pull each other through and with me away, I knew they were in good hands.

A friend once told me, my job as a business man is to enrich peoples lives, so along with the £10 donated to the charity box in the airport, from the customs official who lost a bet that my glasses were triggering the bleeper, I managed to make a few people smile today, so I feel great.

It amazes me just how easy it is to forget these wonderful people who make our businesses what they are. If you get an opportunity to give something back, don’t think about it, just do it. Have a party, the moment I got back from Dubai I was heading for Manchester City Centre for a surprise birthday party with a load of friends from UKFast. You can always find reasons to celebrate.

And when you come across someone in pain, lend a hand and just remember how tough it is. We’ve all been there and we never know when it is our turn to face adversity.

Finally on the subject of UKFast Girl Power Day, Happy Birthday Mrs Jones.

Gail jones Commercial director @ UKFast, Birthday girl 33 today

I consoled myself saying “it doesn’t really matter” over and over again, but deep down, it does. There is a table full of colleagues and guests all having a great time and there are 125 people back at work relying on me to bring home the trophy. Without them, there is no UKFast. Awards do give everyone in the business a lift.

UKFast is a group of amazing, dynamic, innovative people. When UKFast gets nominated for an award, it is the team that deserves the credit.

Even though it’s called the Entrepreneur of the Year award, there should be no mistake. This award represents the entrepreneurial spirit in UKFast, the under current that runs right through the backbone of this organisation.

Its the worry of letting everyone down that I think drives the emotion inside, as no matter how calm I am in the run up, something kicks in and in the seconds before they announced the winner, adrenalin is now flowing. Its a great feeling. The feeling of relief after the expectation and all the emotions and thoughts that gathered, bottlenecking waiting for the answer.

I went to Fiji with Gail recently to help understand our business better. We learnt a great deal about ourselves in the process. I remember doing an exercise, with Tony Robbins where he asked,

“Are you an Artist, Owner Operator or Entrepreneur?”

To be an artist, you must have a talent. If I have a talent, I suppose mine leans towards sales. Its a profession I take very seriously and one I am enjoying learning.

I am an owner operator too, I own a few businesses and and I enjoy the operations.

But what about the entrepreneur. Tony had described the entrepreneur as a man who’d risk everything. This cannot be me therefore, as I am risk averse, I thought to myself.

I went to Tony in the break and asked him, can you be all three. “Of course, but one is the dominant, one needs to be nurtured and developed,”

I felt disappointment as I considered the prospect of not actually being an entrepreneur.

I remember leaving Granada, the company that acquired my first business in my late 20′s. I remember the catalyst was my Uncle Anthony, who said “look how at home you are here Lawrence. You should scrap any future ideas of business and concentrate on this. You were never meant to be a businessman.”

I felt sick at the prospect. I fought back, but Uncle Anthony was convinced. He had based his opinion on the way I’d run my first few ventures, and to be fair he had a point.

When you are all 3; Artist, Owner Operator and Entrepreneur, something has to give. In my case, as a very small business, it was my bookkeeping and financial planning that suffered. Invariably as a small business person, you do too much and you never stop. It becomes a lifestyle business and quite frankly, most people in this position pay the government more in taxes than they make themselves. I know this was true for myself all those years ago.

Back to the disappointment, I looked up to Tony (not just because he is the most amazing communicator on the planet, he is also 6ft 7ins.) and said, “I cannot therefore be an entrepreneur, because, I never risk anything. There is no risk in any of the ventures I undertake.”

“That’s what makes you the entrepreneur, Lawrence. Others would see massive risk.”

This conversation and the ones that ensued with Gail and Tony really got me thinking. He is right, I do not see anything other than a successful outcome. If I do see a problem, I simply adapt or try something new. Now I have had time to digest this, I think the reason UKFast is beginning to be a success is because we employee great “artists and operators,” certainly far better than I could ever be myself.

Then if I dig deeper, Gail my business partner is an awesome “owner operator.”

It’s all very well being an entrepreneur and I have been all my life since my first ventures in school at the age of 7 or 8. But I was never successful. As an entrepreneur you need great operators to team up with.

Look at some of the entrepreneurs in Manchester.

Brian Kennedy (Everest, Sale Sharks) has Ian Blackhurst.
Tim Bacon (Living Ventures) has Jeremy Roberts.

I am only able to develop my skills as an entrepreneur, because I have a 1st class operator working hand in hand with me (literally).

The advice I was given, was you can run a business from all 3 stances, however to truly be great, you should concentrate on your best skill. Simply employ others to fill in the gaps. At UKFast we have developed a strong board of directors who quite literally cover every personality trait on the planet. This is essential if you are going to get balanced answers to your questions. If you are going to step back a little as an entrepreneur, you will live and die by the team you pick.

Tony Robbins surrounds himself with the finest operators and his understanding of measuring and managing successful businesses is simply extraordinary and a joy to watch.

I was given some great advice not so long ago, from someone who identified me as an entrepreneur. He told me to stop going into work. “You will see your business more clearly if you are not there all the time.”

I struggled to comprehend it at the time. However I have found that if you have the right team around you, your business is far more likely to develop if you spend more time away thinking about the future and planning the journey ahead as opposed to the “nose to the grindstone” approach.

This is easier said than done if you haven’t got the right people. If you have weak managers or people who simply are not aligned with your vision and principals, you are in for a rocky ride. If on the other hand, you have a business full of consummate professionals, all of whom would travel the length of the globe for you, it doesn’t take a genius to realise you are going to get a much more positive outlook.

Thank you to all the consummate professionals at UKFast who make the running of our business look very easy indeed.

“Why should I invest in my staff? I already pay them very well. I dont want to socialise with them, they work for me!” These are some of the common responses you hear from business people. And there lies the problem. The “them and us” philosophy. A manager is someone who manages and evaluates peoples KPI’s. Dross! If you are part of a well organised unit, a manager will know his or her team inside out and will be socialising with their team regularly. I don’t mean at a token Christmas Party, I mean a real togetherness. And yes when you do celebrate something together, do it in style. We had our UKFast 10 Year Anniversary and held it at the Palace Hotel, Manchester with a sit down black tie dinner. We reinacted every part of our wedding reception which was in the same building 7 years earlier, with the exception of wedding attire. We thought, what is the best party we’d ever been to? Our wedding, was the obvious answer. The result; lets throw a humungous party for our team, their families and our friends of UKFast. What a party!

We even had Clem Curtis and the Foundations as the band and the entire squad of Sale Sharks players, girlfriends and wives came too. Clem celebrated his 69th birthday that day and still rocked the house like he did back in the 70′s.

This years annual party is even bigger. To celebrate an amazing first half of the year and for just being in business together, we are having UKFest. Yes that is UKFest and not a typo. It stands for UKFestival. We are throwing a weekend festival for friends and family of UKFast down in Wales on the Castell Cidwm estate, and if I can convince the farmer behind to borrow his field, we can squeeze in some extra tents and portaloos and invite even more guests.

But its not just parties and nights out. Your team mates need constant training, their environment needs to be just right. People are sensitive. Quite often, new starters bring with them associations of what businesses are really like. It’s their first hand experience from a previous job and they have the association firmly set in their mind that management equals pain and inconsistency and all businesses are the same.

Sometimes you can never break that association and people go through their lives really not enjoying their job.

We are currently in the process of kitting out our office with a huge amount of greenery. It is partly to celebrate the start of a brand new business venture with a friend of mine who has been in the world of trees and horticulture for 17 years with his lovely wife Clair. It’s also a great excuse for me to have fun and reinforce that by creating a fun environment.

So once you’ve created the Best Place To Work, what then?

I am a great believer in working with people to get them to be their happiest they can possibly be. But you know what, sometimes you just cant please everyone. If you have an individual who doesn’t quite get your core values and what you really stand for, they will probably work against you. Not necessarilly deliberately, but nevertheless, by them not “buying into” your culture and philosophies, they can cause a huge amount of damage. If that person is in a senior position, you have even more trouble.

I read a book called The Extra Mile that focusses on alignment and engagement. The 2 buzz words of corporate HR.

Objective number one is go get everyone aligned with your way of thinking, then get the most engaged people into positions of seniority (as long as they fit the mould) and then work towards getting every individual engaged.

Easier said than done and it is an ongoing quest when you have hundreds of staff. But it is possible. UKFast is living proof of it and although we are more a work in progress than the finished article, we are having fun learning about each other in the process.

The same book states clearly that if you have a manager or someone in a senior position who is either disengaged, or engaged but not aligned, you are in for a rocky ride, but there’s enough to discuss on that topic to warrant a dedicated blog.

I love puzzles. Getting your team right is the ultimate puzzle. It is like doing the rubiks cube in the dark!

So do people really understand the importance of alignment and engagement? I think not. It amazes me how many office environments I see or hear about that are simply not places I’d want to work. And working from an industrial unit is not an excuse either. I went to see James Timpson’s offices in Wythenshaw. Apart from the fact James was building a swimming pool off the staff canteen area, everything about his office was simply a “Wow!” And that being said, I don’t think you could find a managing director who places people and their well being higher on the agenda. James is a credit to British business and an example to other business men and women who want to build something extraordinary. He not only followed in his father’s footsteps, he strode on ahead and paved the way for a new era of “upside down management.”

And so after my FD at UKFast put it so succinctly. “We have colourful staff, but the office is a bit grey” I thought it time to take our “fun initiative” to a new level and start living some of our values! You can always do more, and if you ask yourself that question, can I do more at every stage, you will normally get better results.

So does it pay to invest in your staff? Absolutely! Invest in the workspace, training in every aspect of people and career development. I am just beginning to see the fruits of our labour, and it is worth while. It is difficult to quantify human emotion, we all understand monetary values, but when it comes to effort and passion, we don’t have a scale to measure it. As a result, I think it falls by the wayside in order of importance in 21st century business.

With regards to the office environment, when people ask “what is the rationale behind such a beautiful office?” I simply say, “when I come to work I want to feel a million dollars. I want my team to feel te same.”

If you have any comments or ideas on how we can continue to develop at UKFast, I’d be very glad to hear from you.

I can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the new week marks the beginning of the new era at UKFast. With UKFast’s 10 Year Anniversary Party at the Palace now a fond memory, I can reflect on the funny stories now that I know the night was a success.

It was 11 years ago at Granada I first used the Grand Ballroom at the Palace for an event. It was to raise money for the Christie’s For Cancer Appeal. The night was a huge success and I fell in love with the room. It is the perfect room for hosting a ball.

I knew the hotel well, as I’d originally played the piano there in my early years when I first came to Manchester. I had some great memories of the place and I made some fantastic friends. It was during the era of Les Miserables. And the cast used to pile in there for a few drinks after the show, before dragging me out until dawn. It was a real experience and my links to the area so strong, I bought an apartment in Oxford Place next door.

Years earlier I had my first job in a shop called A1 music, right opposite the Palace on New Wakefield Street. I did a range of jobs, from brushing up, to decorating. The funniest of these jobs, (although not at the time) was when Ann the proprietor asked me did I know anyone who could do plastering? Fancy asking a 17 year old for advice on building. Of course I promptly answered, “I can.” I had seen people plaster many times with the houses my father used to renovate when I was growing up. I failed to mention my specialty was demolition.

The plaster eventually went up and although not particularly smooth, I was quite proud of the job. I spent that evening building all the furniture for the room. The next day I was greeted by Ann’s husband Graham who was furious. He marched me up stairs to see my handy work. All the plaster had peeled off the walls and had covered all the brand new furniture. It had then promptly dried over night!

I did a variety of jobs at A1 including their book keeping, but it was the selling I enjoyed the most. As a “Saturday boy” the professional sales guys hated me in the sale floor, so I was only able to cover for people when they were on their lunch.

Guaranteed with out fail, every lunch I would have a field day selling. I learned that by being honest and directing clients to what they needed as opposed to what the thought they wanted was a great recipe for success. I also realised I only had an hour, so I concentrated my efforts and honed my craft.

As I held the record for the biggest sale in the company’s history, Ann was much aggrieved when the sales men clubbed together and convinced Graham to put me in the basement wiring up reconditioned speakers.

Happy to accommodate, to the basement I went. It was there I was told to answer the telephone and I learnt a knew skill. I was now only able to sell when carrying the speakers across the floor. So this is precisely what I did, and I learned how to get to the point almost immediately, and with in months, we had sold every pair, with me selling the lions share. On the telephone I was also developing relationships, there were a few massive deals where I convinced the keyboard player of a touring band who were playing at the Apollo, who were number 4 in the charts at the time to come in and part with £21,500. Eventually Ann forced Graham to concede that it was ridiculous to bury someone showing promise.

It was around this time that I got my first job as a professional pianist, and rather than rock the boat with the other guys, I moved on and decided to use my musical talent to further my career. Which brings me full circle back to the Palace.

The event on Saturday was seamless, from the outside at least! Behind the scenes, the band, Clem Curtis and the Foundations were without a drummer who had broken down in Nottingham, and with 45 minutes before the start, I called my brother-in-law to ask for help. Dave is a fantastic drummer and agreed to lend me his kit, so we could get it set up and sound checked whilst everyone enjoyed the champagne reception upstairs. He also offered his services as a stand-in drummer too!

There is a saying “you cant chose you family,” and if you could, I couldn’t ask for a better guy. His attitude and calmness meant I was able to enjoy dinner and even with 30 minutes to spare when the actual drummer turned up, I couldn’t have been more relaxed.

On hind site though, it reminds me why I dont do this sort of thing for a living anymore. If you think computer hardware is unreliable, you should try managing musicians!

I also was reminded of what I loved about event organising too. Giving pleasure to so many people is so rewarding. Being on this side of the fence too, where I was the client and the organiser, meant I could make the right decisions there and then. The team comprising of Gail, Rach, Paul and Jonathan literally had the entire evening organised and scripted to the minute. I could not have asked for a better team. Jim Collin’s description “the right people on the bus can be moved anywhere” was demonstrated by the way my events team, comprising of a few of my senior management team, changed roles as efficiently as a chameleon changes colour. But although I had great fun revisiting this former profession, I would not swap what I do now for the world.

It has been an interesting week. UKFast, finalists in the National business awards, winners of 2 ISPA accreditations, but the icing on the cake for me was a very small event, a dinner party with the Sarah Ferguson The Duchess of York.

I am not one for being dazzled by stars of any type. I grew up in my 20′s with some very famous friends and girlfriends, Ashley Paske from Neighbours, Craig Charles from Red Dwarf and it taught me that fame comes with a very expensive price tag. You loose all sense of privacy and there is literally no where to hide.

And the more famous you become, the bigger the price tag! Michael Jackson is a good example of this. A man who became so infamous he not only lost his personal life, he also lost all sense of reality and the fun that we take for granted of just being normal.

As Jacko found out, the media can flip you in minutes from fame to social famine. And if you are lucky, back-again; sadly a little late as he had already passed away.

Sitting next to Sarah, The Duchess of York at dinner last night discussing Michael Jackson I clearly struck a chord. She asked me my opinion on the funeral service / concert. I explained my point of view about how I feel the press dictate a great deal and that they are quick to forget how much damage they may do, yet they blow hot and cold whenever it suits. To me it was more concert than funeral. But that is what Jackson was a “showman” so why not go out on a positive note.

The dinner was in aid of a community project that the duchess is proactively supporting and she and her team (which includes locals from the Wythenshaw area) are doing a sterling job in Manchester helping to establish a community centre which houses a gym down stairs.

It struck a chord with me as I arrived in Manchester 24 years ago, with a few pounds in my pocket and no friends or real home to live in. I remember the loneliness of standing on your own two feet, too proud to consider returning to my little town in North Wales. My father had always told me I’d be a failure, and funnily enough this probably forced me in to a position where I had to survive.

But yesterday, meeting Simon, a young lad of 25 from the area where they are investing their energy, he is one of the team building the community centre project made me realised how lucky I’d been.

I was lucky, I had had a very good education (yet I managed to fail nearly every academic exam I sat!) and I also was taken in a after a year or so later by relatives who took pity on me; a then skin head in bedraggled clothes.
But not everyone is as lucky as that, how do you rise through the ranks when there is no one to show you the way. These days, I think it is even tougher for people leaving home. University actually puts you in debt so that is almost like a major set back when entering the grown up world. Personally skipping University did me know harm. As long as you keep learning keep striving to become better. I think the important thing is to keep away from trouble. As a young man it is easy to get sucked in with the wrong sort of people. It is almost uncool to hang around positive hardworking folk. Yet it is precisely these types you need as mentors to give you the direction you need.
Hats off to Sarah Ferguson. A megastar with her feet on the floor. A particularly likable one too. And to her team making the Duchess on the Estate documentary. It is refreshing to see others making a big difference, especially high profile ones as they are able to amplify their influence via TV with their relationship with the media.

For me, I wouldn’t swap anonymity for the world.

Yet I dont feel I have changed that much. However it is very easy to under estimate the experience you gain from being on hand day to day.

If I take a snap shot of me a decade ago and me now, along with the aging process on the outside, the inside is very different too. Eight years ago I was interviewed on Granada News by Lucy Meacock. Last night at the National Business Awards in the Hilton Hotel in Manchester Lucy Meacock was the presenter. We had a chat afterwards and she remembered Gail and I, however she could not believe how much we had changed over the years. It made me think, she is right, I just assume I am the same person. I often describe myself as a man with “no qualifications” and this may be true, however I now have experience, and that is priceless.

Jim Collins describes “great businesses” in Good To Great as having leaders who grow from within. It makes perfect sense now. Experience out ranks qualifications.

So why then do some businesses grow faster than others? Is it safe to say people are gaining experience at different speeds. I think the answer is obvious. This then explains why businesses evolve at different speeds. It is relative to the amount of learning and experience the entrepreneurs with in the business encounter.

One of the responsibilities Gail and I have at UKFast is to continue to learn and every year we regroup. We go off to the Maldives for a 3 week holiday. 2 weeks of family fun and 1 week of intense preparation for the year ahead. We write huge lists which fill books and we review the lists from previous years. And we tick off our accomplishments and those we miss we carry forward. Imagine a graph that is steadily rising. This upward curve represents everything we do in our lives. It is easy to peak and trough in life, so we then draw a horizontal line at the highest point we are at at present. This line now becomes the platform for continued growth. Anything below this line is considered an area of dissatisfaction, there is only one way to grow.

So if that means, if I had done 6 hours a week of exercise in 2008 and if we consider being in good shape important to maintaining our growth, I would set a goal to increase that to 7 or 8 hours.

We apply this principal to everything we do.

To be truly successful you have to be disciplined. On that journey to achieve whatever you set out in the early days, you will be tempted to ease off, take your eye off the ball, but I have never met a successful person who was not incredibly disciplined.

Take Lucy Meacock for example. She was employed to present the awards at the ceremony last night. Her schedule of responsibilities from her employers that night would involve arriving early for a rehearsal, and being ready to perform between the hours of 8 and 10 o’clock. During those hours she is on show. She will be required to perform her duties at the highest level. For that she will have received her fee and her rider.

Yet she is the consummate professional. Once the show had finished she took the trouble for the next 2 hours to walk around the entire room greeting and thanking everyone for coming. This is a discipline which not only made her successful but keeps her at this elevated level.

I will give you an example of a fallen star. Do you remember Victoria Wood? The comedian. In a previous life before hosting dedicated servers I had a small business that Granada aquired from me called MDC (The Music Design Company). I organised events. I was lucky enough to win the contract for a charity fund raiser, Christies for Cancer. I chose the venue, The Palace Hotel, Manchester (a place I later got married in).

I wanted Steve Coogan ( a then rising star) however Angela Rodden the MD insisted we went for Victoria Wood. Between her and my PA I was out voted. What a big mistake. Steve Coogan was a mega star by the time the event happened. They both commanded the same fee. £17,000 for the hour.

I should have known when I saw Victoria Woods rider. Her list of particulars was ridiculous. I had put on events for mega pop stars with smaller requirements.

We provided everything to the letter. The flowers (a particular length) were ready in her dressing room, the particular alcohol, the flesh coloured microphone that she taped to her forehead, the Steinway grand piano and the spot light that resembled a bomber tracking light from World War II, we did everything.

I went to her dressing room and introduced myself. My God, what a rude woman! I politely explained that Angela (who had chosen her) was a massive fan, and would it be possible for her to have a photograph with her at some point before the end of the evening. It was a flat “no” “you have employed me to do a stage show, and that is what I am here to do!” or words to that effect.

We got the last laugh though, when she was doing her stand up, the sound engineers tripped over a wire and switched off the spot light mid act, which was being operated by Jonathan Bowers who is now UKFast’s communication director.

But this sort of attitude explains why Victoria Wood is no-longer on our screens. It is a great lesson, whatever your profession, always be professional. I have a rule that I only do business with people I admire or have the greatest respect for. If somebody’s standards slip in any way, ethically or performance wise , I will not want to do business with them. I have been known to turf suppliers out if they have not stuck to an agreement, either verbal or written. If you agree something, stick to it. Honour it at all costs.

I had a supplier who cost me a great deal of embarrassment and stress not so long ago. When I confronted their acting MD on the matter, I was told to read the terms and conditions. He said “I think you will find we are doing everything we are contracted to do.”

Two weeks ago, I wrote a cheque for almost £3,000,000. That supplier who has had a monopoly in Manchester on the service he supplied is about to find he has a very passionate competitor in his midst. At a time when they are planning expansion, they are about to loose their biggest customer and find out they have an exodus of existing clients who we already have undertakings with that they are coming on board with our new venture.

Lack of professionalism isn’t a one off. People who are unprofessional are consistently unprofessional, day in day out. And, if you want to be successful, in whatever profession, stay alert and learn from everything that goes on around you. Be disciplined and be a great person. Follow these simple practices and you cant go far wrong.

I’ll see you at the top! Or on that great journey.

It may look as though UKFast sprang out of nowhere suddenly winning awards and accreditations for a wide variety of things however what we are now experiencing is nothing new. Countless businesses before us go through the exact same process.

We have for a decade (in September) been slogging away with the rest of the world oblivious to our presence. This is typical in the business world, and the best analogy of this comes from Jim Collins the author of the best selling business books “Good to Great” and “Built to Last”. He describes this common scenario in businesses by describing his “chicken and egg concept.”

“Imagine an egg” he describes, “sat there doing nothing. Totally uninteresting to the outside world, yet inside there is plenty going on. One day, the egg hatches and out pops a chicken. Suddenly everyone is amazed and shocked at the new discovery. Although the egg has been sat there for a very long time incubating, until the day it hatches, no real interest is shown in it.

It is very easy to run a small business and think that you are getting nowhere. Whist your competitors fly past with VC (Venture Capital) backing and lavish their shiny brands in your faces in the best of the trade magazines. But you must not get disheartened. Easier said than done, now we have a business which appears to be moving on from the ugly duckling stage!

But it hasn’t always been that way. I have had many businesses and even more daft ideas! Although each one has made money and I even sold one to Granada in my 20’s, I never stuck it out to the hatching stage.

There is a danger these days with the DOT COM bubble and conceptual businesses which attracted interest, one thing still remains firm from that time, the ridiculous question of “when is your exit point?”

To me this cheapens your business and all the hard work you and your colleagues put in to nurture and build something special. I have been scorned at by some pretty large entrepreneurs for not having a set exit date or amount of money we will sell for. I hate the word exit anyway. An exit is place you look for when the building is on fire or when you have to leave somewhere in a hurry. I get equally blank faces when confronted with the same question from accountants, lawyers and the like. What is wrong with wanting to build something solid, with longevity? A family business or a small business where you don’t feel you want to set the world on fire.

I believe these make the best businesses. UKFast was conceptualised in a garden, one summer. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I knew the internet was going to be massive as I had spent a year on and off in America and the whole of the US was obsessed by it. The only thing I was sure of was that my new girlfriend Gail Everton would make a great person to have on the team.

Years later I found out from reading Good to Great that this process was a tried and tested method for launching a successful business. Collins talks of getting the right people on the bus and the wrong ones off, then when you are confident you have the right team, find your product. It seems a backwards way of doing things, but ironically now I look back this is what we did. It was just a very small bus, or may be a tandem! The first 4 people (myself included) that sat in the Ducie House surrounded by a plethora of other tiny businesses all with similar dreams and aspirations, are still with UKFast , 9 and a half years later.

It took us the best part of a week to find out what we were going to be doing, and ironically it wasn’t through sophisticated analysis or market research, it was because we tried to register and host a completely different business called thegallery.com. The irony was that the company we tried to do this through was appalling and so we tried another, then another, then another and so it went on until I turned to Gail and said the opportunity is not in the website idea thegallery.com, it was in the hosting of websites for other people.

Daft as a brush, and with out realising the might of the organisations around us, without the technical expertise at that time in house, without sufficient finances to pursue such a dream we set about finding a name.

All this because we were frustrated with the shocking attitudes of these new businesses that were growing by default, because their industry was exploding.

I didn’t care whether or not we made money, I knew there was a hole to fill in the market and part of my destiny was to fill it. A decade later we still fill the gap. Yes, we have had to evolve our product and service and our ability as managers and business professionals, but our core values are still the same as the first day we set up. We still have the same attitude. It is this attitude you need if you want to be truly successful. It is something we all experience in our lives, be it as a child, at school, or on the sports field. It is something easily watered down, forgotten or drowned by mediocrity if not nurtured and rewarded. But it is in all of us, it is why we evolve, it is why we were put on this planet.

You have to believe that you are going to be the best at whatever you do. If you are not going to be, you may as well shut up shop and look to do something else. Yes you may fail, time and time again, but as long as the attitude is there you will eventually succeed.

Companies who go against these giant industry leaders do so knowing that deep down their service is better, their staff around them are better or their product maybe better. After years of diligence in the incubating pre-chicken stage eventually they emerge with an amazing business. All it takes is belief, resilience and perseverance.

So if you are in the incubating stage, don’t give up. Don’t let anyone knock you off your path, or make you feel your product or business is worth less because you do not turnover millions. It is highly likely that you will succeed. It is also likely during tough times like today’s economic environment that you as a small business have a major competitive advantage over your largest competitors. They will be in a position where they are having to hit numbers to impress share holders and stock market analysts.

Remember there are still customers out there you just have to fight harder to win and keep them. Work hard and when the recession lifts you will emerge a fitter, stronger organisation and if you have not already hatched, you will be ready.

I congratulate the winner of this year’s EN Entrepreneur award, Bruntwood’s Chris Oglesby. In a tough environment I thought this was a very fair result.

He is a worthy winner and the rapturous response he received when his name was announced reaffirms that he is a great entrepreneur and has the popular vote amongst the business community.

UKFast was a sponsor of the awards this year and I have to say I was pleased with the result. It is difficult to find another organisation that has done as much for Manchester as Bruntwood.

There are many awards nowadays and some people think that the sentiment behind the ceremony has been diluted. But personally I like to view them very positively.

I am honoured to have won a couple of awards. Most recently in 2007 I was happy to receive the IOD’s Young Director of the Year title. Plus this year, my company, UKFast, has won its fourth Best Hosting award in as many years at the ISPAs.

I’m currently a finalist for the Ernst & Young award, something I’m incredibly happy to have been nominated for.

But in a world where you can blindly beaver away for years, often the only reminder of your success comes from painfully increasing tax demands. I believe that to achieve an award is not just a pat on your back from your peers, but a reinforcement that you are doing something right.
